Once Upon a Time delighted RumBelle fans last week by reuniting Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) with his true love Belle (Emilie de Ravin) after he seemingly saved Henry (Jared Gilmore) from Peter Pan (Robbie Kay). Rumple swore to turn his life around upon his return to Storybrooke, but with Pan planning to reenact the curse to enslave the town, will Rumple really keep up this good guy routine?
“Personally, I don’t think so,” Carlyle tells TVGuide.com. “Rumple continually makes the wrong decisions. So I don’t think there’s any reason to suggest he’ll start to make the right decisions.”
Once Upon a Time’s return to Storybrooke marred by Peter Pan’s deception
It’s Rumple’s ruthless nature that will hopefully save the residents of Storybrooke in Sunday’s midseason (9/8c, ABC). That is, if Pan ultimately doesn’t destroy Rumple first. But Carlyle promises that Rumple has not lost that spark. “If we were to tie these things up and make them nice, to lose the villainy from Rumple, you’re losing a big bit of the show,” he says. “I don’t think that could really work.”
However, Rumple now has a weakness in Belle, whose short-lived reunion with Rumple will be fraught with turmoil if Pan is able to achieve his goal. “That’s what keeps him going,” Carlyle says. “Belle is Rumple’s emotional sensor and that’s probably the main reason that he’s doing what he’s done because he was going to kill Henry in the end of Season 2. There’s no doubt he was going to do that.” Adds de Ravin: “They’re the love of each other’s life and for them to go through all this time apart has been very rough on them.”
In spite of their characters’ time away from each other, de Ravin says that she and Carlyle have been pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming reaction by the fans to the RumBelle relationship. “It’s been amazing,” she adds. “I love the way our relationship’s written and I love working with Bobby and it’s this dynamic that automatically clicked from that first episode.”
When teasing their future, de Ravin points out that Belle may have a relationship with Bae (Michael Raymond-James), “since he’s basically like my step-son. Not legally. She ain’t married yet.”
Carlyle quickly interjects: “They’re not married. Season 4 maybe.”
Adds de Ravin with a laugh: “Oh God, you put that in there and people will freak out.” Go ahead and freak out in the comments now!
Once Upon a Time’s midseason finale airs Sunday at 8/7c on ABC.
Emilie de Ravin’s Belle has been working to save her true love, Rumplestiltskin, on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time.”
“As you can see, even in the first episode from his clothing, he’s getting darker and she’s trying to sort of say, ‘Look, you don’t need to do that.’ And he’s like, ‘Well, I’m gonna die anyway. What’s it matter? This is the only way,” Emilie said when ABC flew AccessHollywood.com up to the show’s Vancouver set, where they made us their guest as the actors chatted with reporters. “She’s trying to basically [say], ‘You don’t have to do it like this,’ bringing out the best as she usually tries to do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
“But no, it’s really fun,” Emilie continued of the latest version of her character. “She pops up quite a lot there… It’s more of an ethereal version, because she’s obviously in Storybrooke as well.”
Emilie said fans of the Sunday night drama will get to know more about the version of Belle that has been appearing in Neverland sometime before Episode 8.
“I think people will be really sort of interested and shocked at the reveal of actually what kind of Belle that is, further on, down the road,” she said.
Belle also exists in Storybrooke, and audiences will get to see more of her in the town the coming weeks.
“We’ve only just started exploring that,” Emilie told reporters. “So her, with her cloaking spell, [she’s] really desperately trying to, first of all, inform everyone of what’s going on and what’s happened with Henry and she’s obviously the only one left from that group that can tell the dwarves, Mother Superior, etc., so she’s got a lot of responsibility to try and get that spell up as soon as possible and just sort of be the mother in a way. It’s kind of cool.”
Belle will also interact with Ariel (Joanna Garcia Swisher) in an upcoming episode.
“She also becomes friends with, possibly, a little redheaded mermaid, which has been really fun,” Emilie said. “That’s been some cool scenes.”
“Once Upon a Time” airs Sunday night at 8/7c on ABC.

There is no Rumbelle on the third season of ABC’s Once Upon A Time— not in the traditional or physical sense anyway. With Rumple (Robert Carlyle) searching for Henry (Jared Gilmore) in Neverland and Belle (Emilie de Ravin) holding down the fort, so to speak, in Storybrooke, the couple can only think or reminisce about each other, not spend actual time together working on their relationship.
“[The fans seem to] want to see more of us in Fairytale Land, actually. A lot of filling in the gaps there, after he gave me the library. There’s a lot of stuff there. They just always seem to want more scenes…which is great, because we love working together, and we always seem to have really interesting scenes. And there’s always stuff to tearing us apart or pulling us back,” de Ravin said when LA TV Insider Examiner visited with her in Vancouver.
And this season the show has certainly given this couple one of the more unique situations in that Belle has appeared to Rumple during his strange and emotional journey in Neverland. Since Belle is a figment, she is more made up of Rumple’s inner thoughts than Belle’s own stock and spirit, so de Ravin did admit her approach to embodying that new version of the character is slightly different than the Belle we have seen in other places.
Although Belle was left behind in Storybrooke at the end of Once Upon A Time Season 2, the character, who is played by Emilie de Ravin, will be back on the show sooner than you would have expected.
We spoke with the actress last week at the Vancouver studio of Once Upon A Time, to find out what happens when we see Belle again.
